Frieze Week Events to Attend

Wednesday, 4th October:

Frieze London & Frieze Masters Preview Day

The preview day for Frieze London and Frieze Masters will lead guests to over 160 galleries from 31 countries, showcasing the works of international established and emerging artists. The event runs from Thursday, 3rd October to Sunday 8th October. The preview day is Wednesday, 4th October.

Private view Gagosian Gallery: Brice Marden

Since his last exhibition at Gagosian in 2000, the American painter, Brice Marden has turned his focus to monochromatic painting – this time, Gagosian Gallery will present a series of paintings Marden produced while exploring the possibilities of terre verte (a particular type of pigment). Due to their chromatic qualities, the layers of oil paint the artist applies on his canvases simultaneously become the material and the subject of the work. Identically sized and painted with the same pigment, the paintings turn viewers’ focus to Marden’s process of painting. Opening reception is on Tuesday, 3rd October, 6pm – 8pm.

Royal Academy of Arts: Jasper Johns: Something Resembling Truth

The exhibition will be the first comprehensive show of Jasper Johns’s work in the UK in 40 years, surveying his artistic evolution for the past six decades. The show will display over 150 artworks, including some of his most iconic works that placed Johns in the canon of 20th century art history. The artist belongs to the American pop art tradition, with contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. His emblematic appropriation of iconography, such as the American national flag, questioned the public’s relationship to archetypal imagery.

Viewers are invited to experience the intersection of the old and the current in a novel way, as the works gain an alternative contextual sense when set side by side.
