Afro Basaldella (1912–1976, Italy) was a leading figure in post-war Italian painting, associated with the transition from figurative traditions to a form of lyrical abstraction. Initially linked to the Scuola Romana, his early work incorporated elements of realism and mural painting before gradually shifting towards a more fragmented, cubist-inflected language. By the late 1940s and 1950s, his paintings developed into fluid compositions of colour and form, marked by a nuanced handling of tone and a departure from strict figuration.

Afro was a member of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti and later part of the Gruppo degli Otto, aligning him with a generation of Italian artists seeking to redefine painting in the aftermath of the Second World War. His work gained international recognition following his engagement with the American art scene, particularly after travelling to New York in 1950, where he encountered Abstract Expressionism. While maintaining ties to European traditions, his paintings from this period demonstrate a heightened sensitivity to colour, spatial ambiguity, and painterly gesture.

Throughout his career, Afro exhibited widely and received significant institutional recognition, including the prize for Best Italian Artist at the Venice Biennale in 1956. He also taught in both Italy and the United States, contributing to the dissemination of post-war abstraction across different contexts.
