A new monograph published by Ronchini celebrates the work of American abstractionist Alice Baber, whose dynamic compositions are characterised by fluid, overlapping forms. Her vibrant use of colour continues to captivate collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide, cementing her legacy as an important voice in postwar abstraction.
The publication features an essay by Piero Tomassoni titled Abstraction Lyrique: American Style. Alice Baber in 1960s Paris, which explores Baber’s transformative years in 1960s Paris. During this time, she lived with her husband, Paul Jenkins, an already highly established figure in the New York School, and immersed herself in the city’s vibrant cultural scene. Paris was a hub for American and European artists in the 1950s and 1960s, and it deeply influenced her work. Baber’s approach to colour, light, and fluid form aligned with the emotional and spiritual explorations of artists like Georges Mathieu and Hans Hartung. Her artistic vision also echoed the Japanese Gutai movement. She and Jenkins traveled to Japan, further shaping her distinctive style, which set her apart from her contemporaries in New York.
