Arcangelo Sassolino (b.1967), an Italian artist known for combining sculpture and technology that often tests both man-made and natural forces such as gravity, pressure and speed, is representing Malta at this year’s Venice Biennale.
Representing Italy at the 59th Venice Biennale is Gian Maria Tosatti (Rome, 1980) marking the first time ever that only one artist has been chosen to represent the host country.
Of the 213 artists, more than 90 percent were women or gender non-conforming and for the first time in the history of the biennale the two top honours given to artists went to black women.

Born in 1925, Beck attended Yale University before dropping out and moving to New York City to dedicate himself to painting. Beck exhibited at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century gallery in 1945, alongside some of the most prominent Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, and Willem de Kooning. A major exhibition of the Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch (b. 1938) will open on April 19th in Venice, during the 59th Biennale. The 20th Painting Action, carried out and installed in 1987 in the Vienna Secession, will be exhibited in Italy for the first time since its creation.
